At Pumpkins Nursery, we are committed to delivering our high-quality childcare with care and consideration for the environment. From working with parents to use sustainable or more environmentally-friendly products in our settings, to educating and empowering all our children to be environmentally-aware.
Here's just a few of the things we do at Pumpkins to help our environment...
Green Bottoms - Eco-friendly nappy waste disposal
We work with Green Bottoms to dispose of all our nappy waste. Their service is specifically designed for nurseries and has been operating since 2011. From 2011 to 2013, the company sent the disposable nappy waste they collected off for recycling at the UK's first ever nappy recycling facility. When this facility closed in 2013, Green Bottoms didn't just stop there! Since then, they've been been working hard to divert as much nappy waste as possible from landfill by converting it into energy that can power our homes. The Green Bottoms team collect all disposable nappy waste from Pumpkins Nurseries. We're proud to use this service and be a part of a better, more environmentally-friendly solution to disposable nappy waste.
Working with parents to use sustainable products
We know that many parents want to use reusable nappies for their children, instead of disposable.
At Pumpkins, our ethos is to treat all our children as if they were our own. That's why our staff are more than happy to do what works best for you and your child when it comes to caring for them in our nurseries.
If you prefer to supply reusable nappies for your child, we're more than happy to use these and help you do your bit for the environment.
Eco-Schools - Empowering children with environmental awareness
Eco-Schools is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world, operated internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The programme connects 19.5 million children, young people and educators through sustainable development education with 67 countries on all five continents participating.
Pumpkins Nursery has followed the Eco-Schools programme since 2013, when we first achieved the Green Flag status. Since then, we have embedded the practices we learned from our certification into our everyday practice and continue to uphold its ethos - from teaching our children about activities they can do at home (like recycling, composting and saving water and energy), to helping them understand biodiversity.
Forest School - Educating children in the outdoors
Our Forest School programme is a huge part of our offering as rural nurseries. We're lucky enough to have access to beautiful countryside at all of our settings and we consider educating our children in the outdoors to be an important part of the Pumpkins experience. Every week, our children get to experience learning in the 'forest'. For Pumpkins children, Forest School is more than just an opportunity for some fun, outdoor play. It's a chance to build confidence in the outdoor environment and to learn about and respect everything it has to offer - from discovering mini beasts, to experiencing all weathers.
